The Science behind Nosebuds

While studying the effects of nasal breathing, Dr David White recognised the potential for a revolutionary device that could help 30% of the population affected by nasal congestion.

The idea

As an Associate Professor at the Auckland University of Technology, David spent over 25 years of applied research focusing on augmented nasal breathing as a new way to deliver physiological and neurological treatments.

His work focused on increasing inhaled nitric oxide, a powerful gas produced naturally within the body and released when we breathe through our nose.

While away on a family vacation, David couldn’t shake the idea of being able to augment the release of nitric oxide while simultaneously aiding to clear congestion for chronic suffers.

This would mean people would be able to experience the benefits of this powerful, natural gas to a fuller extent, and the debilitating symptoms of nasal congestion could be eased.

The research

Through further research, development, and testing, David and his team invented what we now know as Goodair Nosebuds. They achieved their goal of harnessing the body’s natural abilities to breathe better with the aid of a small, rechargeable, non-invasive device.

Goodair Nosebuds modulate airflow when the wearer inhales through their nose.

Small rotors spin and generate a soothing hum that simultaneously aids in the release of nitric oxide and accelerates mucociliary transport, resulting in relief from congestion symptoms.

03

Nitric Oxide

Vasodilator
Relaxes blood vessels, improving circulation and oxygen delivery.

Bronchodilator
Relaxes airways, making it easier to breathe. Destroys inhaled pathogens, acting as a first line of respiratory defence.

Neurotransmitter
Supports the body’s nervous systems, aiding in regulating stress, sleep, heart rate, and breathing.

Low nitric oxide levels are associated with serious health issues, including insomnia, anxiety and depression, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, and neurological decline and disease.

Nosebuds generate vibroacoustic waves, mechanically stimulating glands and cells within nasal tissue

An energy molecule called ATP is released along with salt water

The movement frequency of motile cilia increases (tiny hair-like structures in the respiratory system)

Mucus is propelled quicker, where it gets destroyed in the stomach

Goodair Nosebuds super-charge the removal of any inhaled pathogens, allergens, or pollutants so that they are rapidly removed before they cause issues.

Studies and further research

In 2024, an independent research study was conducted by Dr Jim Bartley, an ENT specialist and associate professor at the Department of Surgery at Auckland University and the Department of Biomedical Engineering at AUT University.

The purpose of the study was to research the effect Goodair Nosebuds have on patients with a known history of chronic rhinitis symptoms. The results showed significant improvement in nasal congestion after only one twenty-minute session of use. All patients reported significant improvement in nasal drainage, nasal pressure, and overall nasal comfort, highlighting that Nosebuds are a safe and highly acceptable form of nasal congestion treatment.

An independent research group is currently investigating the effects Goodair Nosebuds have on the natural microbiome contained within the nose which plays important roles in both airway health and overall wellbeing. The results of this study will provide more clinically relevant dosage and treatment efficacy data and enable fairer comparisons to be made between other technologies.

Developing healthy habits

Through relieving the symptoms of nasal congestion, Nosebuds allow users to breathe as we're supposed to - through the nose, and not the mouth.  Many cultures have long understood the importance of gentle nasal breathing that engages the diaphragm, and yet only in more recent times has there been a growing awareness of just how vital this is for overall well-being.

Nosebuds assist in being conscious of the breath and the impact it has on physical and mental health. Breathing is a core pillar of health, just as important as nutrition, physical activity, and sleep. We must be able to breathe through our noses clearly, and we must learn to do it well.

If we breathe better, we feel better, and we live better.
